HPE Discover 2023: HPE Uplifts HPE GreenLake Private Cloud Proposition Through Portfolio and Partnership Expansion

Analyst Take: HPE deftly leveraged HPE Discover 2023 to fuel the momentum behind HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise, released last June, by giving customers more choice through the expansion of its portfolio of private cloud offerings and partnerships. The move addresses expanding enterprise demand for greater visibility, control, and predictability across their workload and data distributed at the edge, on-premises, and in the public cloud.

The new HPE GreenLake private cloud offerings include:

HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Business Edition is designed to enable customers spin up virtual machines (VMs) across hybrid clouds on demand and self-manage their private clouds from VMs to infrastructure with AIOps-driven simplicity. Now customers can store, administer, and protect across on-premises, edge, and edge clouds in accord with data availability and efficiency to attain an intuitive cloud operational experience. To ease adoption, the offering is available on a self-service, pay-upfront, and pay-as-you-go basis.

HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise now has added capabilities to address edge use cases by connecting to thousands of distributed IT locations to provide managed services for cloud-native and traditional applications. HPE is planning to add upcoming support to deploy Red Hat OpenShift. The offering will also provide new hybrid and multicloud capabilities to self-provision workloads with AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and VMware.

HPE also supports customers looking to build a customized private cloud offering through HPE GreenLake Flex Solutions, which is built on standard modules with the goal of giving customers more speed and simplicity.

HPE boosted its longstanding alliance with VMware by introducing an expansion of HPE GreenLake for VMware Cloud Foundation capabilities. HPE now provides pre-configured and tested cloud modules, optimized for VMware Cloud Foundation, in addition to the software licenses, installation, and ongoing management services, all delivered on a pay-per-use basis through HPE GreenLake. Management of VMware Cloud Foundation through HPE GreenLake can enable enterprise IT to shift resources to fulfill swiftly evolving business demands and avoid overprovisioning by providing customers with a secure, self-service hybrid cloud running on fully managed HPE infrastructure.

Plus, HPE unveiled that its expanded private cloud portfolio will be pre-provisioned at Equinix data centers globally. The expanded alliance seeks to provide customers with more choice and the ability to swiftly deploy modern private clouds.

New HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise Capabilities: Bolstering Competitive Advantages

In my view, the agnostic approach of HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise engenders confidence across enterprises that prioritize choice and flexibility in conducting their cloud journeys. This approach augments HPE’s partnership strategy with hyperscalers such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.

Through these partnerships, HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise complements the public cloud resources of its customers while also fulfilling its overall hybrid cloud strategies. The move to address edge use cases by connecting to thousands of distributed IT locations to provide managed services for cloud-native and traditional applications, in alignment with the decision to start supporting Red Hat OpenShift deployments, only strengthens HPE’s hybrid and multi-cloud ecosystem credentials to assure successful self-provisioning of workloads across AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and VMware.

As a result, customers can distribute the workloads to the hyperscalers and other cloud platforms that are better suited for the public cloud than HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise and vice versa, all according to their overall workload optimization requirements.

Moreover, HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise can be programmatically provisioned, configured, and scaled to meet the demands of the modern DevOps model. The platform is built to integrate into an enterprise’s sanctioned configurations, images, toolchains, and networks. As such, these capabilities are integral to fulfilling organization-wide goals of gaining a strategic, cloud-driven competitive edge by maximizing financial models for cloud economics and forwarding sustainability missions.

As a result, I see HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise delivering a competitive edge over the hybrid cloud offerings of rivals such as Dell APEX and Lenovo TruScale due to key considerations. For starters, the HPE GreenLake platform has a time-to-market advantage over Dell and Lenovo in the edge-to-cloud platform category, making it more battle-tested and validated in fulfilling customer demands.

Moreover, HPE GreenLake market momentum and presence includes capturing more than $10 billion in total contract value for the first time, powering the growth of the company’s software, infrastructure, and services. HPE GreenLake also fueled its annualized recurring revenue (ARR) to $1.1 billion – with an increasing portion of ARR coming from margin-rich software and services. By comparison, TruScale is still a nascent offering and is only now gaining traction. Dell’s divestiture of VMware to Broadcom likely plays a role in the competitive landscape, generating sales and marketing distraction in managing its channels as regulatory hurdles drag out the completion of the deal.

Key Takeaways: HPE GreenLake Private Cloud Portfolio and Partnership Expansion

Overall, I find that HPE is validating its strategic commitment to continue investing in its HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise offering which enables customers to have more choice in advancing their hybrid cloud and multi-cloud journey in full accord with attaining a simple, flexible, and intuitive experience for operating their modern private clouds. Overall, I see enterprises broadening their use of private cloud to advance their digital transformation and modernization objectives.
